Reading Isaiah’s Mind – Chapter 40 – verses 1 – 5

Comfort for Jehovah’s people

peace
peace consolation and comfort to the soul

The Hebrew verb for “comfort”: is nacham pronounced – naw-kham. It means: “to proceed boldly” ; “to become calm” and “to be content”. Other related meanings include to raise someone to life or to resuscitate someone. These are situations where one person comforts another but when one is consoling one’s self the word takes on the meaning of repentance. For example we find “to become remorseful” ; to feel sorry for or sympathy for one’s self or another. Comfort often involves a change of feeling within (the emotional realm) Usually it includes : (1) a change of feelings on the part of one who repents or comforts,  accompanied by(2) “de-facto-fulitity” ,i.e. regret over what has been done and cannot be altered (3) consolation for someone whom one cannot change the outcome of a painful situation. The purpose (intention; objective) of providing “comfort ” to someone involves changing  someone else’s  attitude with regard to an unfortunate situation.
