Reading Iaiah’s Mind Chapter 53 verses 1 thru 12

1. Who will believe this message coming from Jehovah’s arm (offspring; seed; children; progeny; family; heirs; successors; scions)? And more importantly, for whom will the sudden-appearance of this generation of Israel’s family (offspring; family; progeny successors; scions) “mean” (“spell”; be-interpreted-as; be-recognized as;  a sign of ; be understood-as)  “The-End” (“We’re-fucked”; “we’re doomed; we’re buggered; we’re severely broken […]
we're fucked
For whom (apart from Salt Lake’s Melchizedek Priesthood Organization) will the sudden appearance of this generation of Israel’s family (offspring; progeny; successors; scions)  “mean” (“spell”; be recognized as; adds-up to; be-interpreted-as; be understood as) The-End” (“We’re-fucked”; “we’re doomed; we’re buggered; we’re severely broken and cannot recover from this; messed-up; up-against the wall; in a terrible situation; We’ve lost effectiveness, power, or prestige)?

2. For they (Jehovah’s offspring; His-seed; His-children; His-progeny; His-family; His-heirs; His-successors; His-scions) grew-up (advanced to maturity; spent their childhood and adolescence) as hidden and obscure suckers (shoots; sprigs; off-shoots; spin-offs) from the roots of Judah’s family tree (Judah’s pedigree; Judah’s genetic ancestry) as secondary shoots produced from roots (predecessors; forebearers) of Judah’s ancestry.

sucker
For they (Jehovah’s offspring; seed; children; progeny; family; heirs; successors; scions) have grown-up (advanced to maturity; spent their childhood and adolescence) as suckers *.(shoots; sprigs; off-shoots; spin-offs; descendants; shoots from the roots of The Master’s family tree; a secondary shoot produced from the roots (founders; basic-origin)  of Judah’s family-tree,
giving rise to a whole new pedigree  (ancestry;  line-of-descent; recorded- genealogy.

giving rise to a second Jewish line-of-descent; recorded-genealogy) and just-like roots (rootstock; primary form or source), they have risen out of dry (hard; unsympathetic) ground (surroundings; environments). As a people, they were not a clearly-delineated (precisely-described or portrayed) in genealogical-records  and there was nothing pointing (directing-attention)  to any of their posterity so that this generation of Israel’s people would be of any interest to them. Until now, their Jewish ancestry (family or ethnic descent) has remained invisible (hidden and obscure), so that no one would consider any of them precious (beloved-persons).

* Sucker –  A sucker is new-growth that develops from the rootstock (basic-origin; founding-ancestry)  of a family-tree, often an underground (hidden and obscure) part, from which new above-ground growth can be produced) of a plant that has undergone grafting. A sucker does not originate from a seed but instead it grows from the base (foundation)  of the root (genesis; source; breeding; origin or mode of formation) of the a tree (family-tree; lineage;  bloodline; family-tree) In grafting, it refers to a plant, sometimes just a stump, which already has an established, healthy root system,  onto which a cutting or a bud from another plant is grafted. In some cases, such as vines of grapes and other berries, cuttings may be used for rootstocks, the roots being established in nursery conditions before planting them out. The plant part grafted onto the rootstock is usually called the scion. The scion is the plant that has the properties (characteristics) that propagator desires above ground, including the photosynthetic activity and the fruit or decorative properties. The rootstock is selected for its interaction with the soil, providing the roots and the stem to support the new plant, obtaining the necessary soil water and minerals, and resisting the relevant pests and diseases. After a few weeks the tissues of the two parts will have grown together, eventually forming a single plant. After some years it may be difficult to detect the site of the graft although the product always contains the components of two genetically different plants.

hiding her face
These servants of Jehovah among Israel’s people are intimately-acquainted with suffering, as if they are women hiding their faces from others.

3. They’ve been scorned (disdained; reviled; disregarded; treated as if unworthy of consideration; ignored;  held in contempt) and rejected of men. They are sorrowful individuals (persons; creatures; human-beings)  and they are intimately-acquainted with suffering, as if they are women hiding their faces from others. They are despised (shunned; disliked; hated; detested) and this generation doesn’t value (think-much of; regard; esteem) them.

out of order
We, ourselves, think of Israel’s people as inoperative (kaput;  no longer usable; out of service; in-disrepair; out of commission; unavailable to use; out of order; finished; worthless; inoperative).

4. Nevertheless (in spite of that; notwithstanding; all the same)…these unique Israelite “Servants of God” lift (bear) the weakness (sickness; grievous-infirmities; guilt; regrets; wounds) of our generation and they carry (bear; support the weight of) our (this generation’s) grief (deep sorrow, especially that caused by loss of something held-dear; pain; suffering; heartache; anguish; misery; sorrow). They carry (assume the burden; pay-the-penalties;  accept-the-charges; receive the punishment) instead of us (this generation) ,  yet we, ourselves, think of Israel’s people as somehow inoperative (kaput; unusable; out of service; in-disrepair; out of commission; unavailable to use; out of order; finished; worthless; inoperative) or that Israel’s people must surely be smitten (wounded; plagued; disabled; incapacitated) by their own God or that they are a race of people looked-down-upon (dealt-with-harshly; considered-stupid; considered inferior; weakened; disdained) by God,  himself.

matrimony
A “Bond-of-Marriage”(matrimonial-union) with  one of them (this unique group of highly-favored Israelites) makes us (our-generation) safe and secure and thru the wounds that we (people of our generation) inflict-upon (cause; exact-upon; deal-out-to; dispense-to) them we (people of our generation) are healed (made sound or healthy again).

5.  But the Lord’s servant (a unique-group of highly-favored Israelites, acting as one ) , is pierced-through (ruined; damaged; abused; profaned; slain; killed; lethally-wounded) because-of (as a result of) our (our generation’s) transgressions and is crushed (crumbled; beaten to pieces; bruised; humbled distressed; oppressed) because-of (as a result of) our (our generation’s) perversity (depravity; crimes). A “Bond-of-Marriage”  (matrimonial-union) with any one of them (this group of highly-favored Israelites) makes us (our-generation) safe and secure and because of the wounds that we (people of our generation) inflict-upon (cause; exact-upon; deal-out-to; dispense-to) them we (people of our generation) are healed (made sound or healthy again).

holy spirit
Jehovah’s spirit  has lighted-upon (rested-upon; made peace with; reached; entreated; fallen-upon)  this generation of highly-favored Israelites, having in mind, Israel’s personal atonement (reparation or expiation) for all our sins.

6.  All of us are like sheep (see description of sheep in note # 7, below)  each one having let ourselves go-astray according to our own (particular; distinctive; idiosyncratic) ways (habits; repeated patterns of behavior) turning their backs on their own generation of people , so Jehovah’s Holy Spirit* (Sign-of-the-Dove”)  has lighted-upon (rested-upon; made peace with; reached; entreated; fallen-upon)  this generation of highly-favored Israelites, having them in mind, for them to  make atonement (reparation or expiation) for the sins of their “Next-of-Kin” (nearest-relatives; kindred) .

mate for life
Homing-Pigeons form-a-bond (mate) for life, i.e they are faithful and loyal to their companions.

.

* Sign-of-the-Dove -”  the best companion to lead us back to our Eternal home”. The dove was aptly selected by God as a symbol of His Holy Spirit for a couple of reasons:
(1) The homing-pigeon is a variety of domestic-pigeon (Columba livia domestica) derived from the “rock-pigeon”, selectively bred for its ability to find its way home over extremely long distances. The wild rock pigeon has an innate homing ability, meaning that it will generally return to its nest, (first-home; origin) by using magneto-reception.  Homing pigeons use low-frequency infrasound waves to generate acoustic maps of their surroundings, and that’s how they find home even when they are released hundreds of miles from where they originated.
(2) They make a bond (mate)  for life. There’s a reason that turtle doves come in pairs of two in “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” These emblems of love and faithfulness have even inspired poetry in Shakespeare.Turtle doves are also known as “mourning-doves” or rain doves. A male courts a female by flying to her noisily, with his wings making a distinct whistling sound. He then puffs out his chest, bobs his head repeatedly, and calls to her. She’s smitten for life.

fleecing
Each one has been led  (guided; conducted; shepherded) to the matrimonial-alter as (acting-as; in the role of; functioning as) lambs to be slaughtered (offered-up as  sacrifices; butchered;  cut to pieces)they’ve been led like Rachel’s (ewe’s; female-sheep), to suit (be convenient for or acceptable for) the economic-purposes of each  ewe’s owner (Ba’al; lord; master; husband),  who will ultimately  shear (fleece; remove the woolen coat of; cut-the wool off) the sheep.

7.  Each one of these highly favored Israelites has been oppressed (tyrannized; harassed; driven;  distressed) by  taskmasters and each one  has privately  (behind closed-door; inwardly; secretly)  been afflicted (troubled; distressed; beset; oppressed), but never opened her mouth (said a word about it to anyone).  Each one has been led  (guided; conducted; shepherded) to the matrimonial-alter just like (acting-as; in the role of; functioning as) lambs to be  slaughtered (sacrificed; butchered;  cut-to-pieces). They’ve been led like Rachel’s (ewe’s; female-sheep), just to suit (be convenient for or acceptable for) the economic-purposes of the ewe’s owner (Ba’al; lord; master; husband; ),  who is shearing (fleecing; removing the woolen coat of; cutting the wool off) the sheep*.

sheep
A “Rachel” and her two lambs…..All of us are like sheep, each one having allowed ourselves to go-astray according to our own (particular; distinctive; idiosyncratic) ways (habits; repeated patterns of behavior).
* sheep (1) Sheep are foolish (easily fooled; easily led astray; gulled; hoodwinked).
(2) Sheep are slow to learn.
(3) Sheep are unattractive.  Some animals may not be very bright, but make up for it with grace and elegance in their movement and actions. But sheep are so awkward, so lacking in agility and dignity. Although some shepherds may tell you differently, to most outside observers sheep are dirty, smelly, and ugly.
(4) Sheep are demanding. Ever watch a lamb suckle its mother? Almost as soon as it is born, it is violently sucking its mother’s udders. And that insatiable demand never leaves them. They demand grass, grass, and more grass; day after day, and night after night. (Do they ever sleep?) And when snow is on the ground, they aggressively demand food from the shepherd. Just listen to them bleat if their troughs are empty even for a short time. And watch the life-or-death stampede when the shepherd appears.
(5) Sheep are stubborn. Have you ever tried to move a sheep? It’s like trying to move an elephant. Ever watched a shepherd try to manoeuvre a sheep into a fold or a dip-tank. It’s like trying to wrestle with a devil. Half a dozen sheep invaded my garden once. I thought it would be easy to hustle them out the wide gate again. But it was as if an electric shield (visible only to sheep) stretched across the gap. I could get them to go anywhere and everywhere, but through that gate.
(6) Sheep are strong. I’ve watched the most macho of men beaten by sheep. You look at their skinny “arms” and “legs” and think “easy.” Next thing you are flat on your back or face down in the dirt. I’ve been flattened by running sheep. It was like getting run over by a tank.
(7) Sheep stray. Perhaps the main reason Scripture chooses sheep to characterize us, more than any other animal, is because of its well-deserved reputation for straying (Isa. 53:6) and getting lost (Lk. 15:3ff). So many times I was out in the middle of nowhere when I would come across a sheep – miles from anyone and anything – and totally unconcerned. I would look up on a cliff and there was a sheep out on a lethal ledge. Other times, when fishing miles from anywhere, I would come across ditches and bogs with the decaying remains of a wandering sheep, and I’d think, “How did that get out here?”
(8) Sheep are unpredictable. If you travel along the roads of the Scottish Highlands you will soon learn to expect the unexpected. You look ahead on a quiet piece of long straight road with no cars. You spy sheep in the distance on the side of the road. They watch you driving along towards them. Hundreds of yards pass. You are almost level. Well, they aren’t going to cross the road now, are they? Screeeeeech! Well, what do you know!
(9) Sheep are copycats. OK, a bit of a mixed-metaphors here, but I think you get my point. When one sheep decides to start running, they all decide to start running. If you were able to ask one, “Why did you start running?” it would say, “Well, because he started running.” The next would say the same. And the next one. And when you got to the last sheep he would just say, “I dunno.”
(10) Sheep are restless. It always puzzled me how little sheep slept. I would be in my study at midnight, look out, and there they were still eating grass. And no matter what time I arose in the morning – 3am or 5am – they would still be eating grass. Other times, there would be a beautiful summer evening when everything was still and quiet and you would come across a field full of sprinting sheep (usually due to the Scottish midges – look it up on Google). I once heard that for sheep to lie down they need freedom from fear, freedom from friction with others, freedom from hunger, and freedom from pests and parasites. From what I’ve seen, that combination is very rare.
(11) Sheep are dependent. Some animals can cope and thrive without any close supervision. Not sheep. They are very dependent on their shepherd. They cannot live without him (or her).
(12) Sheep are the same everywhere. I’ve been in a number of different countries in my life and enjoyed the many cultural differences. But sheep are the one constant – in character if not in looks. The American sheep is the same as the African sheep (see 1-11 above), which is the same as the Asian sheep, which is the same as… so on and so on.

covetous man
They’ve each been taken (captured; seized; appropriated) by covetous (greedy; grasping; envious) men having-in-mind (craving; yearning; conceiving-of; looking-forward-to; eyeing; imagining; coveting; wanting) to have for their own selves (souls) what each of these Israelite “Servants-of-God” generates (produces; begets; gives rise to; brings about; creates; brings-forth) naturally (innately; inherently; without special help or intervention; in a natural manner).

8. By means of surrounding and enclosing (prohibiting; shutting-up) each one of these Israelite Servants of God  and because of judgment (misfortune or calamity viewed as a divine-punishment), they’ve each been taken (captured; seized; appropriated) by covetous men having-in-mind (craving; yearning; conceiving-of; looking-forward-to; eyeing; imagining; coveting; wanting) to have for their own selves (souls) what each of these Israelite “Servants-of-God” generate (produce; beget; give rise to; bring about; create; bring-forth) naturally (instinctively; innately; inherently; without special help or intervention; in a natural manner).   Who’d have thought (imagined; supposed) that they (highly-favored Israelite Servants of God) would’ve (could’ve; should’ve) been cut-off (disinherited-from; dispossessed-of) their home  (“Land-of-the-Living-Ones”; the dwelling place  of  those who are “awake”(conscious)  and “full-of-life” (alert and active; animated). They receive strokes (calamities; punishment; blows; hits; knocks) for the transgressions (sins) committed by the rest of my people.

child in a dream

10. Yet, Jehovah is inclined-to (willing-to) crush (break; oppress; trample; humble; break the spirits of ) these highly favored Israelites and point (direct-everyone’s-attention) to their apparent affliction (sadness; calamity), furthermore according to Him, each life (soul) among these highly favored Israelites is-tantamount-to (represents; is-virtually-the-same as; is) a-guilt-offering” (a sacrifice offered to expiate sins). They (these highly favored Israelites) will see (behold; view) their future offspring (children; descendants) in dreams (night-visions) and their days (lives) will be prolonged so they may have sufficient time to delight-in (enjoy; cherish; hold-dear; prize; treasure; value-highly) what is  poured-out (derived; obtained;received acquired) by them from Jehovah’s hand (power; endowment; influence).

11. Because of the exhaustion (wearisome-labors as “go’els”; state of extreme mental-fatigue; toil; impoverishment; consumption; weariness) on behalf of others (their “Next-of Kin”; their extended family),  their kindred (“next-of-kin”; closest relatives; extended family)  highly favored-Israelites, the next of kin (husbands; kinsmen; closest -relatives) of these  highly-favored-Israelites will see (acknowledge; accept or admit the existence or truth of; recognize as true) light (revelation-from God; Isaiah’s Book; Isaiah’s criminal-indictment).
